The Fast Train Rogaine

Tiaro

Saturday, 8 April 2000

The 8th April dawned cool, dry and cloudy, it stayed that way for the rest of the day, perfect for a rogaine. 51 participants in 20 teams had put themselves down for the rogaine. They came from as far north as Townsville and Gladstone 14 regulars from Bundaberg/Maryborough and the rest from Brisbane. The course consisted of an area in the east with high relative relief and in the west an area with complex spur-gully terrain with low relief. The eastern area had hills up to 250m in height some of which are covered in a dry rainforest. The western section had a much lower relief and looked almost flat. However it's complex spur-gully terrain made it just as challenging as the eastern section. This section was also dissected by the main north coast railway line and two large creeks. These creeks had numerous large waterholes making crossing a challenge. The Mary River made a pleasant boundary in the west.

At the start a number of trains made the briefing quite noisy however the afternoon was quiet. Teams headed in all directions, with the majority opting to go northwest or north east, a few chose a south easterly or eastly bearing, one team headed west. In this event we had possibly the youngest participant, Rachel who was about 6 months old. Bob, Jane and Rachel stayed out for 5 hours. Richie Robinson and Tom Morris proved to me that I didn't put out enough controls, they got them all. We had two super veteran teams, the Howitt's and the just turned super vets, the Williams.

After the event most adjourned to a camping area on the high banks of the Mary River. A large fire was shared by all. In the morning most went down to the river to wash and swim. This was the 5th event held in the Wide Bay and our third 6-hour bush event. We will be having another 6-hour event next April.

The event would not have been possible without the four landowners, Bill and Theo Jamieson, Brain Swain, and Ray Wade. We thank them for access to their properties.

After the event I received lots of positive comments, thank you for those, this made it all very worth while. If you weren't here, you may wish to ask someone who came to the rogaine what it was like. See you next year.
